About the project

Data is regarded as the key resource in the 21st century and the use of data to inform instruction has become increasingly important to support students. Data literacy knowledge could help teachers to make sense of data and the skill of making sense of data will enable them to make better-informed decisions to support their students. Nevertheless, teachers have expressed that they felt unprepared to use data as they initiate their teaching practice (Education, 2010; Levine, 2006) and many teachers generally lack the skill of data literacy (Sun, Przybylski, & Johnson, 2016). It is necessary to train teachers to develop their competencies to examine inquiries into classroom data uses (Athanases, Bennett, & Wahleithner, 2013) so that they may enhance the effectiveness of their teaching practice (Means, Chen, DeBarger, & Padilla, 2011). Besides, little research has been conducted on how professional learning in data literacy may play a role to support teachers’ growth and become more data literate.

Therefore, this research intends to conduct professional learning in data literacy and explore if it serves as an effective intervention in affecting teachers’ outcomes, namely knowledge and beliefs (self-efficacy and perceived value of data use). A widely accepted professional development framework (Desimone, 2009) suggests that teachers who undergo professional development will increase their knowledge and beliefs. Filderman et al. (2021) data literacy training model that was adapted from the general professional development training model in Desimone (2009) defined beliefs as self-efficacy and perceived value of data use. The data will be analyzed using explanatory mixed methods to triangulate and contextualize the findings. The study will serve as a guide to design and facilitate professional learning in data literacy; develops new insights or adds to the current theoretical understandings in the field of teacher education, professional learning, and data literacy.
