Editorial Advisors for 2020

Charles works alongside his fellow Master Teachers to grow the professionalism of the teaching fraternity by living out the ethos, mentoring and inspiring teachers to be caring, competent and passionate mission-driven educators so as to provide quality education for our students. He keeps aquarium fishes as a hobby.

Prof Hung is Dean at the Office of Education Research and the Head of the eduLab initiative. These appointments require him to delve into the change of social-cultural practices in the context of schools in Singapore. He specializes in social cultural orientations to cognition, in particular, communities of practice and apprenticeship forms of learning. In 2004, Prof Hung initiated the set-up of the Learning Sciences Laboratory. He has been involved in the ICT MasterPlan initiative by the Ministry of Education since its inception in 1997 and has witnessed its evolution over the years in terms of student-centred inquiry learning mediated through technologies. A significant part of the present effort is on translation and the diffusion of educational innovations, which the eduLab initiative is trying to advance. When he has any time at all, Prof Hung likes to go on long walks.

Prof Kaur, best described as a doyenne of Mathematics education in Singapore, has for the past 28 years been actively involved in the education of Math teachers at NIE. Her scholarly interest focuses on the pedagogy and professional development of teachers. She is the founding chairperson for the annual conference for Math teachers and the founding editor for the Association of Mathematics Education book series. She spends time during weekends with family and giving back to society.

Dennis suffers from serious work-life balance problems because he enjoys his work so much that it’s his life. He is Associate Dean (Strategic Engagement) with the Office of Education Research where he is passionate about sharing NIE’s research work with the broader local and international researcher and practitioner communities. He is also a Research Scientist with the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, his home for over 11 years, where he has been working on the Core Research Programme, interventions and curriculum evaluations. His research interests include (in no particular order) school improvement, classroom discourse, philosophy and sociology of education, system studies and comparative education. When he is not immersed in books, he likes to geek out and play computer games and listen to movie soundtracks. Indeed, it’d appear he has no life.

Loh Chin Ee is passionate about reading and finding ways to help students learn to read and love to read. She teaches on the PGDE Literature Programme, and also teaches Masters courses on language and literature education at NIE. Her current research focuses on reading and the place of school libraries for more effective and equitable education (Reading Culture SG). Her favourite book project was putting together a collection of poetry (Little Things, Ethos, 2013) for adolescent readers and her most recent publications are The Space and Practice of Reading: A Case Study of Reading and Social Class in Singapore (Routledge, 2017) and Literature Education in the Asia-Pacific: Principles, Practices and Policies (Routledge, 2018). She enjoys spending time with the family, walking in the park, and (of course) reading.

Hairon‘s current responsibilities include working with colleagues at the Policy and Leadership Studies Academic Group and the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning. The former, teaching in-service leadership courses and graduate courses. The latter, providing support to the Higher Courses by Coursework (e.g., Master’s and the Doctor of Education programmes). In his own research, he looks at how leaders in schools support teacher learning in communities to effect positive change in student learning. Hairon loves running, especially along nature trails. and sailing over the waters close to Pasir Ris, Changi and Tekong Island during weekends!

Lloyd’s vocation involves working closely with his fellow Master Teachers to grow teacher identity, pedagogical leadership and mentoring capacities of teachers, particularly those from the History and Social Studies Subject Chapters, leading to quality learning experiences for students in the classroom. His research interests include History education, curriculum design and pedagogy, adult learning, teacher identity and narrative inquiry. Lloyd also enjoys “Talkin’ Baseball” and “Playin’ the Blues”.

Rita Silver is Associate Dean (Research Design and Integrity) with the Office of Education Research and also an Associate Professor in the English Language and Literature Academic Group. She has been working at NIE and with local teachers since 1999. She has several areas of research interest including teacher talk, classroom discourse, reading comprehension, peer work and teacher professional development. She especially enjoys working with teachers in Singapore schools for their professional development and her own, as she finds we always have things to learn from each other.
